Released in 1988 by Lucasfilm Games, Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is a hallmark of the golden age of point-and-click adventures. You play as Zak, a frustrated reporter for the National Inquisitor, whose dreams of winning a Pulitzer are sidelined by the discovery of a real-life alien conspiracy. The nefarious Caponians have infiltrated “The Phone Company” and are using a “Stupidity Machine” to slowly lower the IQ of every human on Earth.
The game is famous for its globe-trotting (and space-faring) scope, taking Zak from San Francisco to the pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge, and even a secret base on Mars. Along the way, he joins forces with Annie, an expert in ancient artifacts, and two Yale students who converted their van into a spaceship. As the second game to use the iconic SCUMM engine, it refined the verb-based interface that would later define Monkey Island. With its blend of New Age theories, bizarre humor—like a two-headed squirrel and a “mind-reading” nose—and challenging puzzles, Zak McKracken remains a cult favorite for fans of surreal sci-fi comedy.
